Descriptions of Regular Events
These events are hosted either by the LGBTA, the LGBT Caucus, QG&A or a combination of thereof.
AIDS Awareness Week: To promote HIV/AIDS awareness to the Virginia TEch community through speakers, films, and other events. On the last night of AAW, there is a dance event called Club Red Ribbon where students, community members, VA Tech faculty, or anyone else can come together to help raise money through donations to promote AIDS research as well as dance the night away. This usually occurs the first week of December..
April Fools Drag Show: A drag show with musical performances exclusively by Virginia Tech students! Is there really a better way to spend April Fools Day than watching your peers perform for you in drag?
Candy and Condoms on the Drill Field: During this event, club members volunteer in shifts to pass out candy and condoms to students on the drill field to promote awareness and safe sex.
Club Red Ribbon: Close out AIDS Awareness week in style at our annual dance! Dress in your hottest red or black attire and prepare to dance the night away.
Date Auction: Multi-organization date auction to raise money for a charity focused on fighting AIDS. Features a“Mixer” at the beginning to meet the individuals being auctioned off.
Films: Through the year, the LGBTA will provide special film events that are free admission. These movies are commercial movies that can also provide education or awareness of certain topics concerning LGBTQ people.
Freedom to Marry Day: In the Spring, the LGBTA hosts a day of mock marriages of both same-sex couples and heterosexual couples in support of the freedom of everyone to marry, regardless of gender.
Gay at Gillie's: A dance party at Gillie's in Downtown Blacksburg.
Gay in Appalachia: Hosted by the LGBT Caucus, "Gay in Appalachia" has become a fall tradition at Virginia Tech that brings the LGBT community together to explore various issues through the arts.
Lavender Ceremony: The ceremony recognized lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual students and their allies from all majors, both graduate and undergraduates, who earned their degrees this spring.
Live Homosexual Acts: Modeled after the Vagina Monologues, these student-written monologues depict the challenges, obstacles, and triumphs derived from being a queer or allied individual. The LGBTA offers this opportunity to see the world through another's eyes. Come out and support the LGBTA and those sharing their stories.
LGBTA Movie Night: A movie night on campus that typically highlights one or more aspects of “queer culture”. Past movies have included: Hedwig and the Angry Itch, and But I’m a Cheerleader, as well as several documentaries throughout the school year.
National Coming Out Day: A nationally observed day for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender individuals to heighten awareness of the struggles of those "coming out" in today's society. Past planned events include an entertainment act featuring student-written and student-performed monologues, an informational panel and a Drillfield event. National Coming Out Day occurs in mid-October.
The No B.S. Bible Study (No B.S. B.S.): The No B.S. B.S. is a progressive, inclusive, open and affirming ministry for students at Virginia Tech and other people in the New River Valley area. They welcome and fully affirm all people of every gender, ethnicity, religious or non-religious perspective, age, ability, sexual identity, and gender identity. Whoever you are, wherever you are on life’s journey, you are unconditionally welcome at United Campus Ministry. The No B.S. B.S. meets every Wednesday at 8pm in the Black Cultural Center on the first floor of Squires.
Pride Week: To promote the awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues/culture to the Virginia Tech community through films, speakers, musical performances, and/or events. This usually occurs in March.
The Red Condom Bar Crawl: Typically held the Thursday of Aids Awareness Week, students participate in a bar crawl through downtown Blacksburg passing out condoms and spreading awareness of the AIDS epidemic. Those 21 and under can participate by volunteering at a booth on one of the corners of downtown.
Speakers: Throughout the year, the LGBTA will host or co-sponsor speakers who discuss LGBTQ issues, with free admission.
Support Group: Meets every Monday at 8:30pm in Squires. This is a chance to talk about any issues you might have in a safe and confidential environment. Issues do not have to be LGBT-related, and you don’t have to have an issue to come.
Queer 101: The straight survival guide to the next civil rights movement Want to learn the lingo of the queer community? This is the event for you. The LGBTA's former president, AK Kanode, will dazzle you with some of the basic terminology and concepts that every ally needs to know.
